Invited to the 2011 edition of Families in Philanthropy

A meeting organized by philanthropy consulting firm Wise brought together philanthropists from Geneva, Switzerland and other countries to exchange ideas in an intimate setting at the Pensières Conference Centre.

The Families in Philanthropy conference provided a forum for a wide variety of viewpoints and backgrounds. Each family in attendance has developed philanthropic activities in sectors such as music, healthcare and education, to varying degrees. The Dubois-Ferrière Dinu Lipatti Foundation, for example, established in Geneva in 1970 in honor of the pianist Dinu Lipatti and his physician, Dr. Henri Dubois-Ferrière, supports scientific research in hematology and organizes special concerts for science-related causes. Likewise, the new generation of the Saudi Ojjeh family recently began funding scholarships for professional training programs in Brazil and other developing countries.

These two examples were a basis for discussion about the new perspectives that younger generations contribute and the need to successfully hand over the torch. All participants at the meeting expressed a common desire to foster professionalism in their philanthropic endeavors.

Firoz Ladak, Executive Director of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, was able to share his views and experience in terms of assessing social impact and managing an international philanthropic network. Representatives at the conference examined the differences between traditional sponsorship and strategic philanthropy but also highlighted their involvement in fundraising and the incredibly rich talent pool that develops through a philanthropic commitment.

The event was held at the beautiful Pensières Conference Centre, a historical residence on Lake Annecy, and served as a tribute to an extraordinary French family. The Mérieux Foundation is a key player in healthcare and research on infectious diseases in Africa and the French-speaking world.
