Liaisons Urbaines

Launched in 2012 at the initiative of the French Institute and in partnership with the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, Liaisons Urbaines is a program that enhances public spaces in African cities. Through experimental and sustainable interventions that combine urban planning, design, art and heritage, and which bring together citizens, municipalities, cultural operators and local designers, the program is part of a support network for civil society and creativity.

The challenge

This is a particularly important topic in Africa, a complex and diverse nation, for when it comes to public space, one size most certainly does not fit all.

Our ambition

After 3 years of expansion in Benin, Chad and Morocco, the Liaisons Urbaines program will pass into development in Dakar with the support of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations. It will focus on the creation of a skate park—a space outside the walls of the Urban Cultures Center of Dakar, a cultural mediator mandated by the City of Dakar. The skate park will fill the lack of infrastructure for urban cultures.

Highlight the African continent

Call for applications from local architects and designers to highlight the public spaces of African cities

Involving citizens in the process

Link the new space to its urban, social and cultural context, alongside the creative vision of local designers and a concern for function, form and technical and constructive relevance.

Reinvigorating the place of the artist in Africa

Commission photographers and videographers for an artistic vision of the new space

Our solutions

Co-construction with local contributors

Local designers, architects and visual artists are at the heart of urban communities. Through concrete actions, they improve the aesthetic quality and value of everyday spaces and use the local know-how to carry out the development.

Collaborative research

Along with field operations, the program commissions photographers and videographers to bring their artistic vision to the space. Social scientists also shed light on the social issues surrounding the areas and analyze the reception of the new space by its main recipients: the citizens and locals who will manage it.
