Ruta de la Sal 2011: 2nd place finish for the Joves Navegants

Created in Mallorca by a team of English and Mallorcan sailors and modeled on British sailing clubs, the Joves Navegants Foundation teaches underprivileged teens how to sail. The Foundation, which encourages teamwork, respect for the environment and dedication to a common interest, selects eight Mallorcan teenagers every year to take part in the famous Ruta de la Sal regatta between Barcelona and Ibiza.

This year, the Foundation’s yacht Galaxie finished second in its category and 12th among 158 entries in the Ruta de la Sal race − an impressive achievement for the eight teens, their trainers and sailing professionals onboard for the crossing. The team began training in December and sailed every weekend, with a first journey from Palma de Mallorca to Barcelona to get to know one another and to prepare in race-like conditions.

After visiting Barcelona, the seamen, most of whom had never left Mallorca, raised the flag of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations − sponsor of their great adventure − and joined the other crews for a cocktail party on the wharf before the start of the race. Léa Peersman, project manager at the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, remembers “the friendly atmosphere of mutual respect and sharing”.

At dawn, the team hoisted their sails and set off for Ibiza. They arrived on the island, tired but pleased, 15 hours later, voicing their joy loudly in the port. After their extraordinary feat, they’re ready to set sail again!
Year after year, sailors give their time to help hundreds of young people come onboard the Galaxie and discover the joys of sailing and the values it represents. Not only is the project a fun form of sport − it also has a clear social impact. Joves Navegants is a gateway to personal discovery, technical learning and in some cases, even a professional calling. Several teens have gone on to complete professional sailing-related training courses.

The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations are proud to sponsor this initiative and display the Joves Navegants Foundation logo on the Gitana Team boat in recognition of a winning partnership!
